Home Educated Groups

Forest school provides excellent opportunities for home educated children. It is challenging for home educators to provide a wide range of educational activities and experiences as well as environments and settings where their children can interact, learn from and socialise with other children and adults. Sussex Forest School run Home Educated Group sessions in a flexible way that is suited to the home educated child.

A fundamental principle of Forest School is that the sessions are child led and child initiated. Sussex Forest School try to provide opportunities for each child to follow their own interests and develop the sessions and plan and provide resources for future ones with this in the forefront. The group sizes are typically between 8 and 15 children often with a range of ages and can be short, medium or long term. We recommend a minimum number of six sessions but many children attend for whole terms or even throughout the year as it takes time for the deeper benefits of Forest School to be fully absorbed.

A typical session will be around 3 hours long, so a morning or afternoon, and will be in a local woodland setting, with all equipment and resources provided. Costs will depend on the size of the group and what staffing is required. We typically operate an adult to child ratio of 1 to 8 and try to ask for parent volunteer help to keep the costs to a minimum.
